چکیده

Landscape indices are popular for the quantification of landscape pattern. However, all landscape indices being used so far are scalar quantities, and measure patterns without considering sufficiently the pattern shape and the directionality together. Based on planar characteristics defined in mechanics such as centroid, moment of inertia, product of inertia and principal axes, vector analysis theory on landscape pattern (VATLP) is explored here. Firstly we establish a coordinate system of centroidal principal axes (CSCAP). Three related new indices including those describing the direction of pattern distribution (patch orientation (PO), vectorial patch orientation (VPO)), and that indicating the shape of patch’s equivalent ellipse (eccentric rate (ER)) are deduced. These landscape metrics are then applied to the pattern analysis of the lakes in Qian-an county (the study area), Jilin province, China. The vector-based data sets of the study area come from the National Land Use/Cover Database (NLUCD). The application of the theory help us better understand the pattern formation of the lakes and the related ecological processes that occur on both ends of the major principal axis, e.g., the transportation of energy and materials flow, and the ecological gradients.

Analysis of Persian Gardens using Kaplan’s landscape preference theory (Case study: Fin garden, Shazdeh Mahan garden, Eram Garden & El Goli garden)

A review of findings shows that Persian gardens have attracted a wide area of interests between psychologists and environment designers. The main reasons behind the attraction of Persian gardens are natural content and particular landscape configuration. To study these features, overall organization examination is employed according to psychological pattern. One of the impressive psychological ...

Assessment of Landscape Connectivity and Prediction of Migration Corridors for the Baluchistan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus gedrosianus Blanford, 1877) in the Southeastern Habitats, Iran

The Baluchistan Black Bear (BBB), a critically endangered subspecies (CR), is distributed in the southeastern Iran. Modelling of landscape connectivity of the BBBs among habitat patches can be insightful for the conservation managers working in Iran. Our study was designed to identify the potential corridors among 31 habitat patches of the BBBs in Iran using the circuit theory method. Habitat s...

Hot Spots Analysis of Landscape Metrics and Runoff Landscape Index in Ardabil Province

Hot spots are often associated with places where an abnormal process has occurred. Accordingly, their identification can help experts and managers to scrutinize the state of health and sustainability, from an ecological point of view. The present study was therefore conducted to analyze the spatial autocorrelation and identify hot spots of 11 landscape metrics, the new Runoff Landscape Index (R...
